Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar’s comedy-drama Khel Khel Mein is creating a stir in UAE theatres. The film also stars Taapsee Pannu and Vaani Kapoor and brings Fardeen Khan back to the big screen after a long gap of 14 years. However, the biggest issue surrounding the film is its queer content. The UAE Media Regulatory Authority cut some of the scenes essential to the climax.
Fardeen Khan’s character has been given a strange storyline which has led to confusion amongst movie buffs as it follows an edited version rather than the original storyline. Some of his dialogues have also been cut, allegedly due to their controversial content.
Speaking to Mid-Day, an anonymous Dubai fan said they felt cheated by the editing changing Fardeen’s character’s story. “Such censorship prevents audiences from fully experiencing the film’s powerful message,” they said. Another fan added, “I was looking forward to this film as it has a progressive storyline. Stories like this are the ones we should see more of, not less.”
Film’s director Mudassar Aziz also commented on the censorship decision, expressing his disappointment: “It is my professional and moral duty to write and tell stories about all kinds of characters! ‘Khel Khel Mein’ achieves that. It pains me that a film so relevant and made with so much dignity has been spared from release in the UAE,” he said.
“Khel Khel Mein” revolves around the lives of a group of friends who get together for dinner and end up revealing each other’s dark secrets.
