TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — The University of Alabama club hockey team has officially qualified for the playoffs in Lakeland, Fla., in a few weeks.
Player-funded organizations do not receive any financial support from the UA.
Team member Brendan Vatz said a GoFundMe is underway to raise $15,000 for the team’s travel, food and hotel accommodations. They have raised just over $3,000 so far.
“This is a huge blessing. We are student-funded, so anything that goes towards $15,000 is a blessing. It doesn’t matter if it’s $1 or $200. Everything else Because it’s funded by student funds,” Vats said.
With a current record of 12 wins and 3 losses, the team has officially qualified for the CHS playoffs, which will be held from February 23rd to 25th. Coach TJ Lancaster is hopeful that his team can raise enough money to win a playoff game.
“This would be great,” Lancaster said. “Bama Hockey has never won a championship before, but to be the first team to do so is definitely special.”
