Former President Trump and the Republican Party have a chance, indeed a first, to fundamentally change the course of a presidential election in a way that would have been difficult to do before Saturday’s tragic assassination attempt on the former president.
If Trump, as he has stated, changes the tone and tone of his speech at the Republican National Convention from partisan “Pro-MAGA” rhetoric to emphasizing the need for unity, reconciliation and cooperation in our society in the face of violence and division, he will have an opportunity to unite people in a way that has never been seen before in the history of this election.
This will endear him not only to swing voters, but also to voters who dislike President Biden but are tired of Trump’s harsh rhetoric.

Polls so far this year have made it clear that the election is turning relatively favorably in Trump’s favor, with the former president having maintained his lead over the past eight or nine months.
Sure, every now and then, polls show a tie or a slight lead for Biden, but generally, Trump is beating Biden by two to three points nationally and holds even larger leads in key battleground states.
There is also Trump’s evidence He has made progress in many purple states, including New Hampshire, Virginia and Minnesota. But Trump’s prospects of navigating political divisions and using a tragedy that has struck him, and the country, to make the case for a different approach and a different kind of politics make him unique.
Going forward, assuming Trump is able to permanently change his approach, it will widen the political map not only in House and Senate races, but in his own election as well.
This is a really big deal, and it would be important for the country and for his political standing that President Trump actually take a softer approach, which is something President Biden himself did in his Oval Office speech.

Make no mistake: Elections are a referendum on the incumbent. And what happened with Trump means that the American people will be watching him and expecting him to respond, first and foremost, to the horrific events of last Saturday on the biggest stage of all.
As an American, I sincerely hope that Republicans will not continue to blame Democrats as some do, and similarly, I do not want to see Democrats blame Republicans for this incident because of the so-called “harsh rhetoric” of the Republicans.
It is essential that Americans come together and ensure the remainder of the presidential campaign is civil and issue-based, not personal attacks.

If anything good can come from the tragedy in Butler, Pennsylvania, it will be a renewed emphasis and attention on our greatness — our courage, our commitment to free speech, individual liberty, diversity of opinion, and worldview.
Let us sincerely hope that this is the result of this horrific, unspeakable tragedy.
