As record numbers of immigrants enter the United States, causing suffering in New York City and other communities, one group is scoring a major victory. That’s a public defender. Their job is to constantly litigate to gain more so-called rights for immigrants. The right to shelter, the right to food, the right to health care, and even the right to vote in local elections.
Who will pay the bills on both sides of these lawsuits? You do it. Legal advocacy groups such as the Homeless Coalition, the Legal Aid Society, and the Vera Institute of Justice are primarily funded by taxpayer dollars.
They are paying to be legally forced to provide more services for immigrants, even at the cost of cutting vital city services. It’s like hiring your own hitman. It’s absurd, but things are about to get even worse.

On December 14, the New York City Council passed Resolution 556, calling on the state Legislature to guarantee all immigrants the right to a taxpayer-paid attorney when going to immigration court. This will be the “first in Japan” guarantee.

Resolution 556 would give immigrants more rights than American citizens. No one else is guaranteed access to publicly funded lawyers in housing court matters or civil court matters such as divorce.

Who is behind this push? One example is the Vera Institute of Justice.
“We need universal federally funded legal defense services” for immigrants, Bera said. In short, it’s a national army of left-wing lawyers that you paid for. What better place to present this crazy idea than the New York City Council?
The Vera Institute is not the only organization exploiting immigrant rights.

In October, Mayor Eric Adams went to court seeking temporary relief from the settlement and strict rules defining what the city must provide for the homeless as tens of thousands of homeless immigrants arrive. He appeared in court. Immediately, the Legal Aid Society and the Homeless Coalition swooped in, claiming his plan would “eviscerate” the long-standing rights of the homeless.
These lawsuits are funded primarily by you, through city and state grants and contracts. Manhattan Judge Gerald Lebowitz urged the parties to compromise and arranged several meetings in court with lawyers representing the city, state and immigration.
This scam is being repeated all over the country. The Justice Action Center, which is also publicly funded, is representing Haitian asylum seekers who say their rights were violated by U.S. Border Patrol agents attempting to cross the Rio Grande on horseback. suing the government. Immigration lawyers and Biden administration lawyers will likely cross swords. Don’t worry about who wins. We pay for them all.

It’s a free country. Anyone can file a lawsuit. But why do we have to pay for these legal boxing matches?
Disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently wrote that the only remedy for New York City’s deepening woes is to sue the federal government for more money. mistaken. If that happens, even more wasted money will fall into the litigation pit.
Cuomo has also argued that the “right to seek refuge” should apply to all counties, not just Gotham, and that the Legislature should “equitably distribute” the burden of immigration across the state. Talk like Paul, who focuses on the city’s status and no longer cares about the rest of the state.

The concept of a “right to shelter” in the state constitution was concocted by the Homeless Coalition in a 1981 lawsuit. That idea has tied the hands of city leaders ever since. It should be legally challenged. Extending that dubious right to immigrants just arriving here and imposing it on the entire state would only make the mistake worse.
Tell your legislators to stop funding the legal advocacy industry with our money. It’s time to break the stranglehold that publicly funded lawyers have on our city and nation under the guise of good deeds.
