Professional soccer player George Baldock has died at the age of just 31.
Former Sheffield United defender Baldock, who joined Greek side Panathinaikos in the summer, was found dead in an Athens swimming pool on Wednesday night.
According to DailyMail.comciting the Athens newspaper Kathimerini, the coroner ruled his cause of death as “drowning in the water.” Toxicology report is pending.
DailyMail.com added that police found no evidence of criminal activity, and Kathimerini said authorities would examine CCTV footage to see if anyone had visited the premises in the run-up to George’s death. He reported that he plans to do so.
Mr Baldock’s partner in the UK was unable to contact him and became worried. According to DailyMail.com, the owner of the luxury building visited the property and it was he who discovered George in the communal pool.

Baldock was staying in a luxurious five-story building in the wealthy suburb of Glyfada.
His family confirmed his death in a statement obtained by DailyMail.com.
“We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family, we are shocked by this terrible loss. We ask that the media please respect our privacy at this time. We will do so,” the family said.
His Panathinaikos team also paid tribute to X. message Translated: “We are shocked by the loss of George. Shocked. The family of Mr. Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of George Baldock. I support you.”
Reuters report There will be a moment of silence in Baldock’s honor during Panathinaikos’ match against England on Thursday night. Players will also wear black armbands.
DailyMail.com reports that Baldock’s on-field demeanor earned him the nickname “Furious George” during his time at Sheffield United. His fans called him “Starman” and sang David Bowie songs at games.
