The airline said it was taking a “more cautious approach” following the crash, which killed one person and injured dozens.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has changed its seat belt rules and redirected at least one flight route after severe turbulence killed one passenger and sent dozens to hospital.

A 73-year-old British man died of a suspected heart attack and dozens of passengers were injured on Tuesday when a plane bound for Singapore from London encountered severe turbulence and was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok.

Singapore Airlines told Al Jazeera in a statement on Friday that following the incident it had adopted a “more cautious approach to dealing with in-flight turbulence.”

The airline said the revised policy means meals will no longer be served when the seatbelt signs are on.

Cabin crew will continue to secure all loose items and equipment during inclement weather and will continue to advise passengers to return to their seats and fasten their seatbelts.

“Our pilots and cabin crew are aware of the risks associated with turbulence and are trained to assist passengers and ensure the safety of the cabin during the flight,” a Singapore Airlines spokesman said.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is of paramount importance, so Singapore Airlines will continue to review its processes.”

The airline also avoided flying over parts of Myanmar, where a flight between London and Singapore experienced sudden turbulence, instead flying over the Bay of Bengal, according to flight tracking site Flightradar24.

Tuesday’s incident saw passengers slammed into the ceiling of the plane, sending personal belongings and food flying into the cabin.

As of Thursday night, 46 passengers, including nationals from the UK, Australia, Malaysia and the Philippines, and two crew members were being treated in a Bangkok hospital.

More than 20 of them were in intensive care with spinal cord, brain and skull injuries, Adinun Kittiratanapaibul, director of Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital in Bangkok, told reporters.
