Shah Rukh Khan recalls having no money to furnish Mannat: ‘Designer served lunch that cost more than my salary’

Shah Rukh Khan lives with his wife Gauri and three children. Manat, a huge bungalow facing the sea in Mumbai. At the launch event for Gauri’s new coffee table book, My Life in Design, Shahrukh spoke about when he bought the property and how he painstakingly converted it into a home.

Shah Rukh said it was beyond their means when they first bought Manat. he said: “Being from Delhi, we were used to living in bungalows. No one knew that Mumbai has its own system and apartments are even more expensive…we are not used to it because I Not because he was very wealthy, but because in Delhi it seemed like everyone had a bungalow.” said.

He continued: “We didn’t have much money, so as soon as we had money scraped up some money, We said we want to buy this bungalow. And it was far beyond our capabilities. I managed to buy it, but it was so dilapidated that I had to rebuild it. And there was no money to provide for it. Of course I called the designer. The lunch he provided us with explaining how to design the house was well above the salary I was making a month. ”

Shah Rukh said the designer was clearly out of reach, thus making Manat Gauri’s first project as a designer. He also said that his favorite room in the house is the library. “Contrary to popular belief that I spend most of my time on the toilet, I love the library best. It’s a library, I like to sit there.It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book in it, and it feels very intelligent and clever.”

Gauri’s book contains many never-before-seen photographs of Manat, but Shah Rukh also describes what the family is like. He said, “We eat dinner at home, but we have no choice about it. We have to eat dinner together.
