Tom Cruise has made headlines for his involvement with the Church of Scientology since joining the controversial religion in the 1980s.
Alex Gibney, director of the Scientology documentary, recently claimed that he was “surprised” that the “calculations” of the Star of Top Gun: Maverick were not done.
Gibney, best known for directing the 2015 film Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Faith, was heavily criticized by the Church of Scientology after its release.
In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Gibney was asked what it was like to see Cruise endure as the “King of Hollywood.”
“Tom Cruise didn’t have to answer a single question on the matter. [his involvement in Scientology] In eight years since Going Clear,” the interviewer asked.
“I agree,” Gibney replied, referring to his latest project Boom! Boom! The World vs Boris Becker.
“And I’m kind of surprised. I think he’s taken a step back, so he’s not the Scientology ambassador he used to be. [2005] In War of the Worlds, there was a Scientology tent on set. “
“Being a star is very important to him,” he continued. “I agree, he had no calculations. It surprised me.”
Earlier this year, Judd Apatow mocked Cruise’s Scientology links with a series of jokes while hosting the Directors Guild of America Awards.
