The Senate passed a continuing resolution (CR) late Wednesday night that funds federal agencies through early next year, temporarily averting a government shutdown just before the holidays.
The bill passed 87-11, with 10 Republicans voting against it and only one Democrat voting against it. Republican Sens. John Cornyn and Tim Scott were absent from the vote.
CR passed the House of Representatives on Tuesday by an overwhelming majority of 336-95.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York called Wednesday “a very, very good night for the American people,” and later announced that a government shutdown had been averted.

Newly-elected House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) on Saturday announced plans for the administration to set more targeted goals and work to prevent Congress from bundling all 12 spending bills into one.
