I would like to tell you about the ongoing upgrade. Thank you for starting your day with WJCL 22 News. Good morning — I’m Emma Hamilton. And I’m Frank Salkowski. Meteorologist Jonathan Myers joins us… Well, here’s your storm tracking radar… We’ll have showers and thunderstorms today, mainly after 4 p.m. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph, increasing to 11 to 16 mph in the afternoon. Winds can reach up to 24 miles per hour. Chance of rain is 70%. Showers and thunderstorms are expected tonight, mainly before 9 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70 degrees. Southwest wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of rain is 60%. Friday will bring showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 8 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 85 degrees this morning. Upgrades are coming to Dandy Tiny Home His Village in Savannah. The city partnered with the Chatham-Savannah Homeless Authority to build homes for local homeless veterans. And he will be joined live by WJCL 22 News KYRON NEVOAUX to talk about future improvements. Frank, Emma…Savannah Homeless Assistance Group received $300,000 to renovate former veterans’ housing. They plan to renovate the landscaping and exterior painting, and also build a new playground. The village received a high percentage of grants to help veterans get back on their feet. The housing project has been implemented over his five years. The head of the Savannah Authority for Homeless Assistance believes the renovations will help them continue their work. “We have never opened this community more than five years ago, and we have never had a resident evicted from their property. 100% of our residents remain housed stably.” Home Depot plans to invest $575 million in veterans’ activities by 2030. The veterans were removed from the site late this morning while volunteers went to work, and will be returned once the work is done. I will send it back, thank you KY. Voting rights groups are speaking out…about the new Georgia election law. A voter can be removed from the voter registration up to 45 days before the election. It would also remove the Secretary of State from the State Board of Elections. “This is what happened in the 2020 election when voters didn’t feel like this was a state legislature, so by tightening voting laws and making them more stringent, people can feel like there’s no fraud in Georgia.” At least 20 states or territories will qualify for the presidential vote…on the general election ballot, including local state Reps. Ron Stevens… and Jesse (Peatree) Petrea… voted in favor of the bill. Councilman Carl Gilliard, on the other hand, voted against the bill. Despite entering hospice care over a year ago… America’s longest-living president… Jimmy Carter… refuses to sit out the election. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution…the 99-year-old former president…voted by mail this week for the May primary election. Carter is currently receiving hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia. His wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, died in November. reminder. He is eligible for early voting in Georgia until May 17th. And the primary election is May 21st. The court will hear an appeal from an earlier ruling that allowed the case to continue. Back in March…lawyers for Trump and his co-defendants requested that she be removed based on her romantic relationship with her lead prosecutor, Nathan Wade. He has since stepped down from the case. No trial date has been set for the election interference case. This morning, we’re learning some troubling details about a recent shooting in Statesboro. Police released information regarding the incident, which occurred at an apartment complex near the Georgia Southern University campus. Look at this map. It shows where the shooting occurred. Copper Beach Townhomes. Vault. and Eagle Court Apartments. Police say they have arrested eight suspects in connection with the shooting… and they say they are all teenagers. The youngest…only 14 years old. The latest incident occurred in Eagle Court…where someone shot a man…who is expected to recover. Police announce victim – Armed robber with prior conviction suspected of using fentanyl. They say the officer was exposed to drugs and had to be treated at a local hospital. And it turns out that a teenage boy is accused of fatally shooting a police officer at the Copper Beech Townhomes in Statesboro last month. Police announced that 19-year-old Anthony Kent has been charged. He is accused of firing at a police officer after being arrested on suspicion of carjacking. Our crew had the opportunity to ride along with the police and get an up-close look at high-tech security cameras. These cameras, which you may have seen around town, are powered by artificial intelligence. These are run by a company called ‘Flock’ and take photos of every vehicle that passes underneath, whether it has plates or not. *Can also detect gunshots. In fact…Statesboro police officers say it was that technology that led to a shooting earlier this week. <> They drive off, saying it’s just shoplifting, and we get the tag. Instead of having to hunt around and search for vehicles all day long, we can run the tag through the herd and it will show us where we hit it. It is under construction at Oglethorpe Mall in Savannah. Apartments, new restaurants and retail stores could open in old Sears building Madison Capital Group last June received construction permits for five new apartment buildings.
