Last month, director Shawn Levy revealed that Deadpool & Wolverine, now part of the MCU, was almost scrapped, mainly because he didn’t have a story idea for bringing the mercenary hero back as a superhero. Ryan Reynolds, who plays Wade Wilson AKA Deadpool in the upcoming film, echoed the director’s revelation in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Reynolds said he didn’t think a character like Deadpool would fit into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe: “I didn’t know if I was going to play Deadpool again. I wasn’t going to say that publicly, but I didn’t know how a character like Deadpool fit into that world. [of the MCU],” He said.
The search for a story was in earnest, and one of the rejected ideas was a low-budget film with no special effects. [Karan Soni’s character] “Dopinder and some of the things I’ve collected and seen along the way,” Reynolds said, adding that Deadpool 3 was originally going to be an event film rather than a superhero movie. Oddly enough, the idea of a road movie appealed to Reynolds, and he thought it would be a fun project.
But all’s well that ends well, as Hugh Jackman will ultimately come out of retirement as Wolverine to join forces with Reynolds’ mercenary hero in a major commercial project that’s due to hit the big screen on July 26th.
Levy previously revealed that Deadpool 3 was nearly scrapped due to the film’s struggle to find a story that was original and would live up to the expectations created by the other two Deadpool films.
Alongside Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, actress Emma Corrin will play the main antagonist, Cassandra Nova.
