BOSTON – The Red Sox added right-handed hitter Tyler O’Neal to the outfield in a trade with the Cardinals on Friday night, filling a key area of need.
The Sox acquired Nick Robertson and minor league right-hander Victor Santos in a trade in exchange for O’Neal, a two-time Gold Glove Award winner.
Trade details
What the Red Sox will receive: Mr. Tyler O’Neill
Cardinals receive: RHP Nick Robertson, RHP Victor Santos
Robertson, a right-hander, came to the Sox last July in the deal that brought Quique Hernandez back to the Dodgers. Santos did not pitch last year as he recovered from an elbow injury.
With the addition of O’Neal, the Red Sox have balanced their outfield with three left-handed hitters: Masanao Yoshida, Jalen Duran, and Wylier Abreu. O’Neal joins Rob Refsnyder as the right-handed outfielders at manager Alex Cora’s disposal.
With the addition of O’Neal, Sedan Rafaela, MLB Pipeline’s No. 3 pick for the Red Sox and an excellent defender in center field, will likely start the season in Triple-A.
Boston’s hope is that O’Neal, a 28-year-old from British Columbia, can return to his form in 2021, when he boasted a slash line of .286/.352/.560 with 34 home runs, 80 RBIs and 15 RBIs. His stolen bases placed him eighth in National League MVP Award voting. O’Neal won two consecutive Gold Glove Awards for his excellence as a left fielder.
Over the past two seasons, O’Neal’s playing time has decreased primarily due to injuries.
Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak announced during the winter meetings earlier this week that the team would start outfielders Lars Nortvaar, Tommy Edman and Jordan Walker, with Dylan Carlson serving. Because of the decision, O’Neal is likely to be traded. Primary in 2024 as his backup.
O’Neal made no secret of his desire to play every day, and the Cardinals agreed that he deserved that chance, which contributed to the club trading him.
His contract status should also have been taken into consideration. O’Neal is in his final season before free agency and made $4.95 million last season. According to Cotto’s contract, if O’Neal goes to arbitration this winter, he is expected to make $5.85 million.
It remains to be seen what outfield position O’Neal will play in Boston. There is also a possibility that the club could move him. O’Neal has started 324 games in left, 36 in center and 12 in right during his career.
Given O’Neal’s athleticism and arm strength, the Red Sox may think it’s a waste to play him in left, where he doesn’t have much of a place to cover or throw. 2023 wasn’t a great year at the plate for O’Neal (.231 batting average, 9 home runs in 238 at bats), but he ranked in the 89th percentile in the majors for arm strength and 80th percentile for sprint speed.
With the addition of O’Neal, Yoshida is expected to spend more time as a designated hitter than he did in his rookie season.
