Strong families are the foundation of strong communities that build a stronger nation. Unfortunately, our families are in crisis.

Soaring divorce rates, the breakdown of traditional marriage, radical ideologies, attacks on faith, and government intrusion into our daily lives are destroying the families and country we love.

As we discussed with former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Dr. Ben Carson in a recent episode of Newt’s World, America doesn’t have to be this way. In his new book, “The Perilous Fight,” Dr. Carson offers the inspiration and answers we need to restore America’s primary foundation: the bond of family.

Carson said he, like many people, fears we are losing the country we love, and he urged readers to return to the Bible and family values on which our country was founded.

Parents in fast-growing states reveal what they want from family-friendly policies

During our conversation, Carson said three simple steps will make the biggest difference in a young person’s chances of escaping or avoiding poverty. They were surprisingly simple.

Those steps include graduating from high school, getting a full-time job, waiting to have children until marriage, etc. Citing a Brookings Institution study, Carson said following each of these steps would lower the chance of falling into poverty to less than 2 percent.

This statistic should come as no surprise to Americans. There was a time early in our nation’s history when education, marriage, and hard work were valued.

“These are values that are passed down through families,” Carson said, “but when the traditional nuclear family breaks down, those values don’t get passed down.”

New York Times columnist acknowledges ‘family breakdown’ is liberals’ biggest ‘blind spot’

It used to be common knowledge that having a child out of wedlock was a bad decision for both parents and children: the lack of a stable mother or father figure has serious negative effects on a child’s life.

In his new book, A Dangerous War, Dr. Ben Carson provides the inspiration and answers we need to restore America’s core foundation: family unity. (iStock)

“Children who grow up in broken homes are 2.3 times more likely to be homeless. Think about that: they’re twice as likely to be in police trouble or incarcerated. They’re twice as likely to experience academic failure, alcoholism, drug abuse and teen pregnancy,” Carson said.

Amazingly, Carson said he believes our enemies are trying to destroy America from within. Those who want to fundamentally change our country and replace it with a fundamentally different one have spent decades chipping away at our traditional, family-centered foundation.

Communist goals in the 1960s included taking control of schools and teachers unions to indoctrinate people, taking control of college newspapers to indoctrinate them, encouraging college students to riot, and normalizing deviant sexuality.

In many parts of America, these goals have been successful, weakening our moral character and national identity.

A recent poll by the New Majority Project found that 84% of Americans believe parents have a right to know what goes on in the classroom, but teachers unions are vehemently opposed, spending roughly $5 billion a year on politics to lobby state legislatures to limit parental oversight in schools.

Extremism in the classroom has led many parents to turn to homeschooling, which has doubled since 2020, and many families have waited years to enroll their children in private or religious schools. As Carson said, “It shows the American public knows what’s going on.”

The pandemic has opened a window into the world of classroom indoctrination, as parents reject this miseducation and seek alternatives.

We must rebuild America’s core biblical and family values before the entire system falls apart. This work begins at home. The future of our nation depends on the health of our families and communities.
