While many Illinois students skipped school for spring break and headed to Chicago’s art museums for the holidays, one iconic spot unexpectedly closed for “unplanned museum maintenance.”

The Museum of Science and Industry announced the closure in a statement, adding that it would be open Thursday with “normal spring break business hours.”

A subsequent announcement from the museum revealed the reason for the closure.

“Today, MSI is relocating some military artifacts from the museum archives. We have specially trained military and local personnel on-site to ensure the utmost care, proper and safe removal. The museum has decided to close its doors to the public “pending an evaluation and removal process,” it said in a statement.

The museum announced late Wednesday that the move was complete and it would reopen as planned.

MSI is open Monday through Thursday under extended “spring break hours,” opening at 9:30 a.m. and closing at 5:30 p.m., according to its website. The museum’s regular business hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The reopening is scheduled for Monday, April 8, according to the website.

April 21st is a day when museum admission is free for Illinois residents.

More information about Wednesday’s unscheduled closure can be found here.
