According to a survey by Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communication, only 3.4% of American journalists identify as Republicans, and an additional 36.4% identify as Democrats.

In the first survey 52 years ago, 35.5% of respondents identified themselves as Democrats, 25.7% as Republicans and 32.5% as independents. The percentage of people who identify themselves as Democrats and independents has changed over the years, with the percentage of people identifying themselves as Democrats reaching a high of over 44% in 1992.
The 2022 survey showed that the percentage of people who are independent was a record high of over 51%, an increase of 1.5 points from the same survey conducted in 2013.
The overall percentage of people who identify as Republicans has declined over time, with the exception of the 1992 and 2002 surveys, where the increase was less than 2 percentage points.
In 1982, 11 years after the first survey was conducted, 18.8% of respondents said they were Republicans, compared to 38.5% who said they were Democrats and 38.5% who said they were independent. 39.1% of the respondents answered.
A 2013 survey found that just over 7% of American journalists identified as Republicans, compared to 28.1% of Democrats at the time.
