Bronx (WABC) — A car chase that spanned the two boroughs ended with a police-involved shooting on Saturday night.
Police say the shooting occurred in the Grand Concourse section of 161st Street and Summit Avenue, but the incident actually began when a call was received in Manhattan that a car had been broken into.
Officers arrived at the first scene at 149th Street and Convent Avenue in Hamilton Heights and confirmed the break-in.
Officials said they saw a car driving recklessly nearby as they inspected the scene.
Police began chasing the reckless driver and ended up in the Bronx, where they arrested one of the occupants of the vehicle.
Officials say another suspect fled into a swampy area near the main Deegan highway. Minutes later, the suspect held a weapon and police at him.
“At this time, members of the 3-0 District are engaged in a shootout with this individual. After this shootout, the individual will run into the wetlands right next to Major Deegan, where a second shootout will occur. NYPD patrol chief John Chell said.
The police chief said the suspect was shot in the head and leg. The 39-year-old was known to police and is in critical condition at a local hospital.
