The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sector on the northern border made more arrests last fiscal year than it had in the previous 13 years combined.

The Swanton Border Patrol recorded 15,000 apprehensions through 10 months of fiscal year 2024, the department’s highest record ever and more than 14,000 more than the fiscal year 2021 record. CBS 19 reports.

The sector, which stretches 295 miles from the Canadian border and covers all of Vermont and parts of upstate New York and New Hampshire, saw more arrests at just one point this year than the previous 13 combined, the report said, adding that illegal immigrants from 85 countries had attempted to cross the border illegally in the area.

The report comes as illegal immigration remains a top concern for voters ahead of the November election, with many polls showing voters frustrated by the record number of illegal crossings at the U.S. southern border between 2021 and 2023.

While the southern border has received much of the attention, the report notes that record numbers of illegal entries and apprehensions have also been reported on the northern border so far this fiscal year: A record 190,000 migrants have been apprehended at the U.S. border in fiscal year 2023, and 162,865 have been apprehended at the Canadian border so far this fiscal year.

The report also noted that approximately 1,100 known or suspected terrorists (KSTs) attempted to enter the United States from Canada between 2021 and 2023, accounting for the majority of the more than 1,700 total KSTs arrested nationwide since fiscal year 2021.
