A new type of dream team may be born.
When flag football debuts as an Olympic sport in 2028, NFL players could be among the participants.
Via Mark Maske washington postNFL executive Peter O’Reilly said in a press conference Tuesday that the league will work with the NFL Players Association and individual teams if current or former players wish to register.
“We understand that desire,” O’Reilly said. “We believe this is a great opportunity as player interest is genuine and desirable”
The league will certainly support active players’ participation, as the league recognizes that as interest and participation in flag football grows, so will interest in professional tackle football.
The LA game opens on July 14th and concludes on July 30th. This is an advantageous period as it relates to the wider football calendar.
Retired tight end Rob Gronkowski said he would like to participate. He will be 39 years old at that time. Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill has also expressed interest.
If current players qualify, some key members of the team could still be in high school.
And if enough current and former players are willing, competition for spots on the U.S. team could end up being far more intense than on-field competition with other countries.
