Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards was fined $50,000 by the NBA for lewd and indecent gestures aimed at fans during Saturday Game 1 They beat the Los Angeles Lakers.
Later in the third quarter, Edwards was seen exchanging words with courtside Heckler while sitting at the scorer’s table. Just before rejoining the game, he responded with a crotch grab and explicit remarks. “My d**k is bigger than you.”
The league will crack, but will stop except for the suspension
The NBA admitted to inappropriate behavior, but did not end Anthony Edwards. The fine was officially announced Tuesday, hours before Game 2 in Los Angeles.
Not his first offense this season
This is Edwards’ second major fine. In March he was docked $35,000 to delay his exit after being kicked out in a matchup. That incident was added to his total of 16 technical fouls, leading to automatic one-game suspension.
So far, Edwards has fined a whopping $320,000 to mix on-court explosions, foul language, and other behavioral issues.
A strong playoff start has cast a shadow
Despite the controversy, Edwards was a court force in Game 1. He recorded 22 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, and eight rebounds in the 117-95 Timberwolves victory that he put the Lakers on the heels in the first round series.
Star number, but the team is struggling
Now in his fourth NBA season, the 23-year-old is solidifying his position as one of the brightest young stars in the league. He increased his score average by 27.6 points this year, improving his shooting rate. However, Minnesota regressed in the rankings, finishing sixth in the Western Conference, forcing a tough first-round match on the road.
All eyes in Game 2
Edwards is allowed to play, and will try to lead the Lakers 2-0, the Timberwolves, who were third seeded in Game 2 on Tuesday night.
