Finnegan was very strong in the first half, posting an ERA 2.45, saving 25 games. This has resulted in an All-Star appearance in the Veteran Savior. However, the wheels began to fall after an All-Star break and NAT was unable to find a right-handed trading partner.
Despite posting a 5.79 ERA in the second half, Finnegan is still a reliable and good thing, but not a great bullpen skill. He has hot and cold stretches, but tends to average at an ERA of about 3.50-3.70 per season. The Finnegan is also extremely durable, making at least 65 appearances in each of the last four seasons. You know what you’re trying to get from 33 years old.
It will be interesting to see if Finnegan will be given a closer role right away. My guess is he will, but people like Jorge Lopez and Jose a Ferra will breathe their necks. Overall, it’s good to see Finnegan coming back. He’s far from perfect, but he’s reliable and very pointless.
