Katie Kasten shares her yoga journey.
“I discovered yoga when I was 18 years old, but it wasn’t an instant love affair. Insecurity and comparison held me back. I fell in love with yoga’s healing powers. A few years later, I was recovering from a spinal injury. I combined that with butt shaking and yoga, and I’ve been working on it long-term ever since.”
The key to maintaining a powerful mindset is to let go of your ego. – Katie Kasten

Learn about YA classes Teacher: Katie Kasten
We sat down with this powerhouse yoga and fitness teacher for a Q+A session so YA Classes members and YouAligned readers can learn more about her.
YA: What is your favorite self-care habit that you cannot live without?
Katie: My ultimate self-care routine is getting outside with my three adorable dogs: Captain, Peach, and Honey. We make it a ritual to soak up the sun in the morning and evening, and we play fetch all the time. It’s a blend of some of my favorite things: nature, animals, and sunshine.

YA: What songs or musical genres do you often use when teaching (or practicing)?
Katie: There’s nothing more uplifting than EDM and hip-hop when teaching and practicing. When I hear the beat, I want to shake what my mom gave me and it’s contagious! Only explicitly of course 😉
YA: What is your favorite motivational quote?
Katie: “I don’t need loneliness, because I’m never really alone. I don’t need greed because I already have it all. I don’t need to doubt, I already know.” – Ram Dass
These words by Ram Dass motivate me to become a better person and remind me that I have the power within me to grow.
YA: What is your favorite yoga pose? What is your least favorite?
Katie: Frog pose is my favorite yoga pose. It connects me with my pelvic floor (which I often have a hard time relaxing) and fills me with a sense of flexibility and strength. Back extensions, on the other hand, are not my strong suit since my lower back is already stiff. Everyone poses as the enemy, right?
YA: What is your favorite place in the world you have been to so far and why?
Katie: Costa Rica holds a special place in my heart. The lively music, delicious food, and laid-back culture make me feel like a goddess. It’s like a sexy, fun Latin paradise where happiness and relaxation reign.

Katie: Who knows why this comes to mind (laughs). . . But maybe it was when you slipped and fell in front of your crush in middle school? I had grand plans to impress him with a dramatic entrance with his hair blowing in the wind, but instead I ended up falling flat on his face to the ground.
Needless to say, my romantic movie moment turned into a humbling experience. Despite the accident, this work is a reminder to embrace vulnerability and find humor in life’s awkward moments.
YA: What is your best advice for maintaining a powerful mindset?
Katie: The key to maintaining a powerful mindset is letting go of your ego. By releasing the need for constant comparison and negative judgment, we create space for our true selves to shine.
Authentic empowerment comes from connecting with our inner essence and allowing our true strength and passion to guide us. Silencing the ego gives us confidence, resilience, and purpose.
