Mavis Customer Says Toyota 4Runner Stalled After Oil Change

Powerlifting Portage (@powerlifting_portagee) posted a viral TikTok about her experience, garnering more than 74,000 views as of Saturday.

“This is why it’s so hard for me to trust mechanics,” she begins. “So on Friday, I took my car to Mavis for a routine oil change and brake and rotor replacement. So I dropped it off, picked it up again, and they were like, oh, it’s ready. So I got in the car, turned it on, and right away it felt like the car was struggling to keep going.”

She says she wanted to get back in her car right away, but it was too close to closing time. She thought the problem would resolve itself, but the car “stalled twice” on her way home.

“Oh my god, it’s like a Toyota 4Runner automatic, right?” she says. “So those things don’t die.”

The TikToker said he called his mechanic and told him about the problem. But their reaction surprised her.

“They say, ‘Didn’t you ever do that before?'” And I said, “Yes, that’s for sure, and I’ve had this car for three years, so I’ve never been able to drive it before.” I feel like I know exactly what it feels like.’ I have never done anything like this! ”

She said the mechanics denied it happened as a result of anything they did.

She says she checked the oil level gauge after putting fresh gas in the car and seeing that the problem persisted. At this time, she was able to identify the problem.

“Did you know that there’s a little bottom and a top that holds the level gauge, and the oil is supposed to be between the two?” she says. “Well, it was far. Looks like they stuffed too much shit out of my car.”

The TikToker said he took his Toyota 4Runner back to a repair shop and some of the oil was drained out of it.

“They removed some of the oil and re-oiled it…but the funny thing is, it’s working perfectly now,” she says, turning off the camera. Her video cuts to a photo of the dipstick in question, showing the dipstick indicating that the car is actually overfilled.

She added in the video’s text overlay, “When I picked it up, there was oil all over the steering wheel and shift lever, but I’m really happy that there’s nothing wrong with it now.”

Some commenters watched her video and said they had no confidence in Mavis’ ability to effectively solve car problems.

“Those guys aren’t mechanics,” one person wrote bluntly.

Another person replied: “A mechanic…or was it an oil change station?” Because mechanics don’t work where there’s a ready supply of lubricant. ”

“Mavis was my first mistake,” said someone else, implying that they wouldn’t rely on a cheap tire shop to properly repair their car.

One commenter who said he used to work for Toyota said he always saw customers bringing in damaged vehicles from facilities like Mavis.

“I worked at Toyota for 15 years. We always receive cars from those locations,” they said. “Please at least add some oil.”

So what should car owners who want to properly maintain their vehicles do? One TikTok user advised: “Talk to a professional who knows the trade.”

“Go to your local car show and look at classic and muscle cars,” they advised. “Ask what kind of owners use them in your area. These guys will give you the best mechanics in the area.”

If you’re wondering how the shop overfilled the engine with oil, one of the app’s users shared his anecdote.

“They forgot to drain the water before filling it up so I had to fix it because another store did it,” they wrote.
