Dramatic video showed a Lufthansa Boeing 747 bounce twice off a California runway before aborting the landing and returning to the sky.
Footage of Tuesday’s failed landing at LAX was shared on Airline Video Live, which streamed live from the California airport, calling it “the most grueling landing” of the three it had filmed to date.
Lufthansa Flight 456 appeared to be landing normally until the wheels touched down, then white smoke billowed out from under the landing gear and the plane jerked upward.
The 747 can be seen bouncing twice on the hard runway pavement, its wheels barely hitting the ground, and then crashing.
After a second failed landing, video showed the 400-seat plane taking to the air again, and the pilots decided to abort the landing.
As the plane bounces on the runway, Airline Video Live owner Kevin Ray can be heard repeatedly shouting “Wow!” I was shocked by the live stream feed.
“Holy Molly!” Ray yells.
“Oh!” he exclaimed before saying, “I think that was the wildest landing I’ve ever seen on air.”
A flight commentator later noted that he could “smell” burnt rubber from the wheels of the jet that failed to land.
The plane circled the airport and was able to land quickly and without incident.
The cause of the landing failure was not immediately clear.
