The Los Angeles Lakers have finally regained their full roster in court, but their defense appears to have disappeared. In their latest set-off, the Lakers fell 118-106 to the Orlando Magic on Monday night, marking their third straight loss.
Los Angeles started strong and held a narrow 60-58 lead at halftime. However, their defensive efforts fell apart in the third quarter, allowing Orlando to surpass 34-18. Magic’s Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero dominated the second half, scoring 32 and 30 points respectively, while Wagner also contributed nine assists.
Luka Doncic led the Lakers with 32 points, while LeBron James added 24 points and eight assists. Despite their offensive contributions, Los Angeles was unable to contain Orlando’s offense, continuing a worrying trend as the playoffs approached.
Fatigue or deeper issues?
Lakers head coach JJ Redick acknowledged the team’s struggle, citing lack of energy and defensive lapse.
“We looked tired there,” Reddick admitted. “We couldn’t maintain the intensity we started the game.”
Since obtaining Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks in early February, the Lakers have achieved eight games in a row, but have since lost seven of their last 10 games. Important injuries, including James’ recent absence in seven games, were due to tension in the gro caliber, disrupting the rhythm. The team is now fully powered, but their defensive execution is not solid.
Reddick pointed out communication failures and poor habits as the main perpetrators.
“We’ve recently prioritized rest over shootarounds, and that’s hurting us defensively,” he said. “You need to go back to basics.”
Tightening of playoff images
Despite the recent recession, the Lakers remain fourth in the Western Conference, with 11 games remaining in the regular season. They hold a comfortable lead above the ninth seeded Sacramento Kings, but they will need to regain their shape to solidify their position.
On the other side, Magic lost six games homeless, won straight in victory, and is now sitting in eighth place in the Eastern Conference, fighting to secure a playoff spot.
If time is needed before the postseason, the Lakers must quickly fix defensive issues. Otherwise, their championship aspirations could be at risk.
