The Philadelphia Phillies moved just one game away from another World Series with a 6-1 victory in Game 5 against the Arizona Diamondbacks on a night when Kyle Schwarber made postseason history.
With this victory, the Phillies won the 7-game National League Championship Series (NLCS) with 3 wins and 2 losses.
The Phillies have been hitting home runs for fun throughout the postseason, with leadoff hitter Schwarber setting the tone for the team almost every night.
After already scoring one run in the top of the first inning, Schwarber came to bat in the top of the sixth with Philadelphia holding a 2-0 lead.
In a scene that has become all too familiar to rival fans, the 30-year-old hit a huge home run to right-center field. The 461-footer also put Schwarber in the history books.
The Phillies’ star designated hitter smashed No. 11 and surpassed baseball great Albert Pujols for the most home runs in NLCS history.
Schwarber also extended the record he broke on Friday and moved to the top of the postseason home run list for left-handers. His name now stands at 20. According to ESPN, Schwarber is the fifth player to reach the age of 20, and he did it earlier than anyone else.
Also, in the top of the 6th inning, Bryce Harper hit a 444-foot home run, continuing his incredible postseason run. It was Harper’s 11th postseason home run for the Phillies, tying him with Jason Werth and teammate Schwarber for the most in franchise history.
“The thing about Harper and Schwarber is they’re very smart,” Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen said after the one-two punch. ESPN. “They’ve been there the whole time.
