Josh Hartnett talks about M. Night Shyamalan’s new thriller ‘Trapped’.
Extra’s Mona Kosar Abdi spoke with Josh about his character, a serial killer who goes to a pop star’s concert with his daughter only to discover it’s a trap set by the police to catch him.
In real life, Hartnett took her daughters to see Taylor Swift in London, but admitted after filming the movie that it was “weird.”
“My daughters are old enough now to go to these events,” Josh says, “and we wanted to give them exactly what they wanted – the full experience, and we did, and they had an amazing time.”
Josh noted that the Swifties’ “frenzy” is similar to what Knight captured in the film.
He added: “I did the film before I went to the concert, I didn’t really know and that’s how I felt that day. [people] “They were just going nuts. All the kids were going crazy and they had heard Lady Raven’s music beforehand so they were real fans and they were all singing along and going crazy… It was exactly what I experienced at a Taylor Swift concert.”
Hartnett joked that his character Cooper helped him prepare for a Taylor Swift concert.
To prepare for the role, Josh had to do a ton of reading, researching the dark side of sociopathy and serial killers. “There are so many books out there now about these people and why they did what they did, and the first thing that struck me was that the people who wrote these books were, quite frankly, fascinated by these books,” he said.
Josh spoke about returning to Hollywood after a period away.
He said: “I’ve always looked for the most unique stories and the most unique characters and the most interesting directors I can find. I have a bit of the opposite tendency. Throughout my career, I’ve been focused on broadening my range as an actor and being able to play different types of roles.”
As for the theory that he left Hollywood and is now back, Josh agrees “to a certain extent” with that assessment.
He commented, “I wasn’t doing Hollywood movies, but it’s not like I suddenly packed up my bags and angrily moved out of LA one day and never came back. It’s just that my interests were different to what people in the system wanted from me. That happens sometimes, but now our interests are more aligned.”
Harnett also spoke about family life in the English countryside: “Everything is different in a way. You know, even the nouns are different,” he said.
His kids even have British accents! He added: “The kids loved being there.”
“Trap” will be released on August 2nd.
