Eight people were killed and nine are missing on a cargo ship that capsized off the coast of Japan earlier this week, the Japan Coast Guard said Thursday.
The Coast Guard said six of the dead were Chinese and two were Burmese.
The Hong Kong-flagged Jing Tian sent out a distress call late Tuesday night while sailing 110 kilometers (68 miles) west of the Danjo Islands in the East China Sea with 22 crew members on board.
All 14 Chinese and eight Burmese crew members are believed to have left Jin Tian in lifeboats, but heavy seas hampered rescue efforts.
On Wednesday, the Coast Guard said 13 crew members had been rescued.
But the eight rescued were declared dead after being taken to a hospital in Nagasaki, the Coast Guard said Thursday morning.
Rescue efforts continue for the nine missing crew members, the Coast Guard said.
Kimcheon ran into trouble en route to the port of Incheon, South Korea. She left Port Klang, Malaysia in early December, according to her tracking site MarineTraffic.
