Bismarck, North Dakota (KXNET) — The local musician’s album “Live from the Northern Plains” was a huge hit, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Blues chart. We spoke to the groovy duo behind it to learn about their success and the sound that got them there.

Jennifer Lin and Richard Torrance are singers and musicians from Jennifer Lin & the Groove Revival who established themselves in the blues genre.

“At the time, I was singing mostly country rock,” Lynn recalls. “And everything I was singing was really bluesy. I’ve been a big fan of Travis Tritt since I was a kid. Tritt, like Chris Stapleton, has a lot of blues in his vocals. Richard asked, “We sing a lot of blues here, but have you ever tried the blues genre at all?” And I did. It was a great fit and everything has been easy since then. ”

Their latest album features 10 songs, 5 originals and 5 covers. One of the songs, “Lay Your Memory Down,” was sung live in the studio.

Torrance explained that it takes special skills to be an artist in the blues genre.

“You need improvisational skills, and that’s what you need, because there’s only so much you can do with the blues. And almost all the melodies are already recorded and thought out. So whatever you want to do , you just put a twist on it.”
