Former Alabama standout JD Davison has reached a major milestone in his basketball journey. The 22-year-old security guard was named the most valuable player in the 2024-25 Kia NBA G League after an outstanding season with the Main Celtics.
Seasons to remember
Davison led the G League in points, averaging 25.6 points per game, adding 5.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 1.4 steals. His contributions helped Maine secure a third seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. During the season, he recorded 13 double doubles and two triple doubles, earning over 30 points in 15 games.
His advantage was not limited to the regular season. In the first round of the G-League playoffs, Davison put up 38 points and 12 assists to win Maine 115-95 against Capital Go-Go. His all-round game and leadership make him stand out as one of the most impactful players in the league.
The Celtics organization praises Davison’s growth
Brad Stevens, president of the Boston Celtics basketball operations, praised Davison for his work ethic and steady improvements.
“JD embraces the idea of continuous improvement and we are excited about him,” Stevens said. “His hard work and team-first attitude led to this achievement.”
Main Celtics head coach Tyler Ruschbrook repeated similar sentiments, highlighting Davison’s leadership and development.
“His commitment to his own growth is second to none,” Rushbrook said. “However, what really sets him apart is his leadership. Having a G-League MVP is a testament to all his efforts.”
From College Star to G League MVP
Davison’s journey is filled with highs and lows. As Alabama’s top recruit, he was expected to be selected for the lottery in the 2022 NBA Draft. However, after an inconsistent freshman season, his draft stock fell, making him the 53rd overall pick from the Boston Celtics.
Rather than letting him define him during that set, Davison made tireless efforts to prove himself. Over three seasons with Maine, he became the franchise’s greatest leader ever. His record-breaking performance solidified his legacy in the G-League.
What’s next for Davison?
Many around the league believe Davison is ready for the next step.
“He’s an NBA player,” said Jule Holiday, a veteran Celtics security guard. “He’s doing everything he needs to do. I think he’s going to get his shot.”
Boston head coach Joe Matzla praised Davison’s growth, particularly in his ability to influence victory.
With his MVP season solidifying his position as one of the top talents in the G League, the next question is whether he will win a full-time NBA roster spot. As the Main Celtics continue their playoff pushes, Davison is focused on victory, but his future in the league looks brighter than ever.
