J. Richard “Dick” Emmens, a longtime supporter of Ball State University and son of former Ball State President John R. Emmens, has died. he was 89 years old.
Dick Emmens held numerous positions at Ball State University. Ball State University Foundation On the board, he served as chairman of the board and chairman of the finance committee. He has also served as Board Chairman and Scholarship Chair of the Ball State Bold Capital Campaign.
But Emmens’ most passionate endeavor at Ball State University is arguably: Emmens Leadership Scholarship Program, which he created in 1976 after the death of his father.according to Mr. Emens’ obituary:
“In 1977, five outstanding high school students received $150 scholarships each. Each scholar was awarded a four-year full tuition scholarship.…
Dick has played a key role in securing donations for the Emmens Scholars Program and to date there are 40 Emmens Scholarships (Umbrella Funds) to support outstanding high school students who wish to attend Ball State University. . With the continued support of Chris Vallo, Dick sent over 200 letters each year to scholars, their families and donors, thanking each one for their contribution to the success of the Emmen Scholarship Program . Since 1977, there have been 316 Emmens Scholars. Each (Dick) calls it a “family”. Dick’s generosity and dedication helped the Scholars Program grow as he was deeply concerned with helping form new leaders for the United States. He found great satisfaction in watching the growth of young Emmens Scholars leaders. ”
In December, at Ball State University’s fall commencement ceremony, Emmens was awarded an honorary doctorate of law in recognition of his contributions to Ball State University.His Life, Career, and Love for Ball State Featured in the Spring 2023 issue of Ball State Alumni Magazine.
Emmens was still a boy in 1945 when his father, John, began his historic journey as the sixth president of Ball State University.
