Vice President Kamala Harris has officially become the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced the news on Monday after the conclusion of a five-day virtual roll call of nominating delegates to the party’s national convention, which begins in Chicago in two weeks.

The nomination came just hours before Harris was set to announce her running mate, who will kick off a campaign tour of seven battleground states with a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

Monday’s formal confirmation of the nomination came three days after Harris secured a majority of the nominating delegate votes.

“We are incredibly proud to announce that Vice President Harris has received more than half of the votes from all convention delegates and will be the Democratic nominee when the polls close on Monday,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said in a statement Friday.

“I am honored to be selected as the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” Harris said in a conference call with supporters on Friday.

His nomination was never in doubt as Vice President Harris was the only candidate eligible for the presidential nomination, but it would be a historic milestone in the nation’s history that she would be the first woman of color to lead a major party’s national campaign.

While the formal nominating vote by delegates was conducted remotely, the Democratic National Committee announced that a ceremonial roll call would take place at the Democratic National Convention, scheduled to begin in Chicago on August 19.

Harris’ formal nomination comes two weeks and one day after President Biden made the highly publicized announcement that he was ending his 2024 reelection campaign against former Republican President Donald Trump.

The shocking news for Biden comes amid growing pressure from within his Democratic Party to step down after his disastrous performance in the first presidential debate with Trump last month. Biden, 81, The awkward, stumbling speech raised questions about his physical and mental ability to serve another four years in the White House.

But Biden’s immediate endorsement of Harris sparked a surge in her support from Democratic governors, senators, representatives and other party leaders. Within 36 hours, Harris had announced she had secured the party’s nomination with the verbal endorsement of a majority of the convention’s roughly 4,000 delegates.

With the virtual roll call for presidential nominations now over, Democratic National Committee rules mean Harris can now name her running mate.

According to the DNC, the convention chair will declare that candidate as the party’s vice presidential nominee.
