MOSCOW: More than 30 people were detained in Ireland in connection with the riots that broke out after an unknown person attacked people with a knife in Dublin, Commissioner of the Irish national police, Drew Harris, said on Friday, reported Sputnik.

“Overall, we have 34 arrests, 32 of which will be heard in court this morning. We have 13 shops which have been damaged, significantly damaged or have been subjected to looting. We have 11 Garda (police) vehicles destroyed through arson or very extensively damaged, and three buses, public transport buses destroyed,“ Harris told a press conference, which was broadcast by Irish channel RTE.

One police officer received a serious injury, while several others were injured from missiles being thrown at them from the crowds, Harris said, adding that there will be “a fundamental review of public order tactics” against the background of the violence of the riots.

On Thursday evening, a man in his 50s armed with a knife attacked a group of people near a school in central Dublin, leaving at least five people injured, including three children, local media reported. The suspect was detained by the police at the scene. Investigators are not considering the possibility of the attack being driven by a terrorist motive, law enforcement officers said, adding that the suspect had acted alone.

The stabbing attack in Dublin sparked violent clashes later on Thursday, with participants being “driven by far-right ideology”, the police said. On Friday, the protests were stopped, the Irish police said. – Bernama, Sputnik
