A retrospective exhibition of Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto has opened in Tokyo. Hayward Gallery, London.
This exhibition features works by artists inspired by science. Examples include the following series: Conceptual forms and mathematical models, Sugimoto photographs mathematical shapes.in lightning fieldhe took a 400,000-volt Van de Graaff generator into a darkroom and used it to expose light-sensitive film, drawing on the work of Michael Faraday and others.
Sugimoto’s latest projects are also on display. optics. Inspired by Isaac Newton’s seminal work of the same name, Sugimoto constructed a prism that split sunlight into its component parts and photographed the results. The primary colors of red, blue, and yellow are striking, but in subtle tones, and in a gallery lit by bright sunlight, the images are perfect for contemplating physics, photography, and the inquisitive scientific mind. It’s a method. “I’m just borrowing the experience of so many important scientists and working on it again and seeing how far we can go,” Sugimoto says.
The Time Machine is on display at London’s Hayward Gallery until January 7, 2024.
