Colorado students and teachers are experimenting with artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom.

High school students in Longmont, Colorado, are learning how to design their own AI model projects at the St. Vrain Valley School District Innovation Center. This program began this fall.

Mai Vu, AI program manager for St. Vrain Valley School District, said the goal of the AI program is to teach students how to use AI to solve real-world problems.

“AI is everywhere, in the music they listen to, in Spotify, in what they watch on Netflix, but they just don’t know it’s working in the background,” Vu said. Told.

Aiden Buchanan is a high school senior and the program’s AI student lead.

“From learning about it to getting the parts to learning how to solder to actually wiring everything, it was definitely difficult,” Buchanan said.

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

“A big part of the curriculum for AI self-driving cars is camera-based detection, like detecting stop signs and stop lights,” Buchanan said.

Vu said one of the partners in the AI program is The AI Education Project, a five-year nonprofit organization. Christian Pinedo, chief of staff for the AI Education Project, said his nonprofit works with schools across the country and responsibly teaches teachers and administrators how to use AI. said.

Pinedo said his nonprofit works with school districts in New York, Maryland, Florida, Texas, California, Colorado and Ohio.

“That’s it for today. [artificial intelligence] It’s very clear, so people are starting to understand a little bit more clearly, “Oh, this is changing education, this is changing the workforce, and I don’t know much about it.” Pinedo said.

Students enrolled in the course will first learn the basics of AI. Students can then start creating and tracking their own AI projects, Vu said. Another example of a student project is a game app that teaches French.

The students said they are looking forward to learning more about what AI can do.

“It does something in a short amount of time that people would spend hours doing, and as someone who is still in high school, I think that’s really cool,” Buchanan said.
