FRANKFURT, Nov 5 (Reuters) – Hamburg airport remained closed on Sunday as police dealt with a hostage situation likely involving a custody dispute, authorities said.
The airport closed all take-offs and landings on Saturday evening after police arrived in large numbers to deal with a man who had climbed over a fence and entered the airport grounds with a child in tow.
A police spokesperson said a car containing a 35-year-old man and a 4-year-old girl was parked underneath the plane.
“The operation continues. Our negotiators are in contact with the persons in the vehicle,” police posted on social media platform X on Sunday.
A spokesperson said police were communicating through a Turkish interpreter.
Police said the child’s mother said her father contacted her.
Police have not confirmed previous statements that the man was armed and fired shots.
Hamburg airport authorities said 286 flights and around 34,500 passengers were scheduled for Sunday.
