On Monday night, Halle Berry hit the red carpet at the New York premiere of her new psychological thriller/horror film, Never Let Go.
Extra’s Mona Kosar Abdi spoke with Halle, who plays a mother who must protect her twin sons after an unspeakable evil takes over the world.
Speaking about what attracted her to the film, she said: “When I read the script, it was a world I’d never seen before. I was intrigued by the idea of a mother with two children giving birth inside her home and never leaving the house for 10 years. I thought, ‘Wow, this is amazing’. It captured my imagination because it was a world I’d never seen before.”
She said of her character, “I wanted to portray her darkness and complexity. Mama suffers from generational trauma. We’re talking about the old world, and we’re left wondering in this film. Maybe when we get a sequel, we’ll talk about all that, but we’re left wondering: What happened to Mama in the old world? What happened? What trauma did she suffer?… She’s living in the red, but at the same time, she loves her kids and she’s doing the best she can.”
Berry also laughed at online jokes about her violent character and her (in her own words) “jacked-up” wig.
She joked, “Everyone gives me loads of flak about the wig, but I don’t care. I’m playing a character! Some of the characters have their hair standing up. That’s the truth!”
Berry spoke about taking on these roles herself as a mother.
She said: “I have two children that I have to protect at all costs so honestly, it’s the most natural thing for me and that’s why I’m drawn to these roles.”
Hallie has played Catwoman and Storm, but could we see her reprising these iconic roles?
She replied, “Maybe, but I’m also someone who is always looking to the future. What was it like before and what is it like now. So I’m someone who looks to what’s next, not to the past.”
Berry also spoke about her open stance on issues surrounding women’s health and aging. She explained, “I stand up for myself because I want answers. So when I stand up for myself, I stand up for all women. And when it comes to women’s health, especially as we go through life after 40, there’s so much injustice done to us, so little research done, so little information given to us. It’s time to make our health a priority. We have to demand it.”
“As women, we have to look forward to this time in our lives, and I want young women like you to know that you’re only going to get better,” Harry stressed. “There’s nothing to be afraid of. There’s nothing to fight against. Aging is a beautiful part of life.”
“Never Let Go” will be released on September 20th.
