The Wisconsin Ethics Commission, made up of both Democrats and Republicans, has suggested that a political action committee (PAC) supporting Donald Trump’s presidential campaign may have violated the law. The organization, named Save America PAC, allegedly attempted to illegally provide large sums of money to Adam Steen. He was running against Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, a Republican.
Breaking up with friends
Trump and Vos were once friendly, but trouble began after Vos said it was impossible to change the outcome of the 2020 election. President Trump has claimed that the election was stolen through voter fraud, but there is still no strong evidence of this.
Pat Strachota, a Republican who previously served as speaker of the Assembly, will chair the Ethics Committee. She agreed to recommend charges against PAC. This means at least one other Republican on the committee also wanted to indict PAC. The commission said the PAC likely attempted to illegally transfer more than $40,000 to Steen’s campaign. As Newsweek reported, they turned the case over to the local district attorney.
unregulated spending
In Wisconsin, you can only donate up to $1,000 to political candidates. But political parties can donate as much as they want. To get around this rule, it is alleged that people who want to donate more than $1,000 to Steen’s campaign should donate to their local county party. They then say the money is for Steen, and the county party ends up giving it to Steen. Save America PAC allegedly donated $5,000 to three local Republican county parties with the purpose of benefiting Adam Steen’s campaign. According to the documents, this happened on August 31 and September 1, 2022.
Documents suggest that there was a discussion about the use of the benefits before Steen’s contributions were paid. The county party then either gave money directly to Steen’s campaign or paid vendors on the campaign’s behalf. This violates Wisconsin campaign finance laws. The commission did not name the specific individuals accused, only that PAC’s “agents” may have violated the law.
President Trump’s support was not enough.
Despite efforts to remove Vos, he won the 2022 Republican primary by 260 votes, dealing a blow to Trump in Wisconsin. Vos then easily won the general election, defeating his Democratic challenger and Steen, who ran as a write-in candidate.playing cards support steen The statement criticized Vos as an “RINO” who does not support the “America First” policy. Vos had doubts about the 2020 election, but ultimately decided not to decertify the results. Angry So do some Trump supporters.
