The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office is releasing new information surrounding the deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa.
The couple and one of the dogs were found dead at their Santa Fe home on Wednesday, and authorities have launched an investigation.
A press release from the Sheriff’s Office said: It should be noted that there were no obvious signs of foul play. ”
This release continued. “In the early hours of Thursday, February 27, 2025, Hackman and Arakawa were taken to the medical researcher’s office. An autopsy was conducted. The initial findings pointed out that neither individual had any external trauma. Both individuals were required to have carbon monoxide and toxicology tests.”

The office stated, “The attitude and cause of death have not been determined. The official results of the autopsy and toxicology report are pending. This remains an unresolved investigation.”
A search warrant obtained by “Extra” reveals that their deaths were deemed “suspecting” after authorities discovered that their front door was open and there were no signs of carbon monoxide leakage.
The document states: “At this point. The attitude and cause of death associated with the passage of Eugene “Genes” Allen Hackman and Betsy Arakawa is unknown. Affiant believes that the circumstances surrounding the death of two deceased are sufficiently suspicious in nature and suspicious enough to demand a thorough search and investigation. The reporting party discovered that the front door of the residence was open unsecured, so the deceased’s healthy dog, another healthy dog near the deceased woman, the deceased dog keeping 10-15 feet from a woman 10-15 feet from a woman 10-15 feet from a woman 10-15 feet from a woman , the male defendant is in another room in the residence, with no obvious signs of a gas leak. ”
The document says Betsy was found on the bathroom floor near the scattered pills and space heaters. The search warrant said her “body was in a disintegration state with bloating in her face and mummified into her hands and feet.”
Jean was reportedly in a mudroom near the kitchen. His sunglasses were nearby so he might have suddenly fallen. According to the documents, “The male deceased also showed clear signs of death that are consistent with the female deceased.”

While the main entrance was open, lawmakers reported that the rest of the house was safe, with no signs of forced entry and no signs of “the residence had run through.”
A New Mexico gas company also tested the gas line and said, “At this time there is no indication or evidence that there are any issues related to pipes within and around the residence.”
Two maintenance workers who found the couple said they hadn’t seen them for about two weeks.
