The University of Wisconsin has partnered with Garmin Health, a leading provider of digital health solutions that leverages data and insights from Garmin products.1 Motion Connected is an online engagement platform that captures data from smart devices.

the goal? It helps to understand each student’s health status and encourages personalized lifestyle modifications. Each semester since fall 2017, approximately 700 students at River Falls College have sported the vívosmart® 5 or vívosmart® 4 in their required physical education courses.

This course requires students to complete 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week. It also analyzes the physiological impact of decisions related to her six dimensions of health (social, physical, mental/emotional, intellectual, career, and spiritual) and the health-related components of physical fitness.

Feedback from early participants suggests that the combination of Garmin smartwatches and Motion Connected will help students better understand the difference between busy and active time, with an average of 177 minutes of weekly activity in fall 2023. Evidence suggests that physical activity can be integrated into daily life.

The core of this collaboration is the integration of the Garmin Health API, which sends Garmin watch data to the Motion Connected platform for viewing by instructors. Thanks to the Garmin Health API and the wealth of sensor data generated by Garmin devices, UW-River Falls can contribute to student success and well-being.
