A Frenchman has set a world record with a 23.6-foot-tall matchstick model of the Eiffel Tower, although it was not initially included in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Richard Proud said he had been on a “rollercoaster of emotions” this week after spending more than eight years and 4,200 hours building the model using more than 706,000 matches and 23kg of glue.
Proud said in an earlier statement that the world record was denied by Guinness because officials claimed they used the wrong type of match.
Guinness World Records initially said he was ineligible because he did not use “off-the-shelf” matches. Mr Proud first used a commercially available match to cut off each person’s head. Fed up with this tedious process, he asked the manufacturer if he could just buy the headless wooden stick, but Guinness refused to record it.
