David Hyde Pierce downplayed the “Frasier” revival and focused on “other things.”
The 64-year-old actor played Dr. Niles Crane, the younger brother of Kelsey Grammer’s character Frasier Crane, on the classic sitcom from 1992 to 2004, but will not reprise the role in the latest revival. I decided on that.
“I didn’t say, ‘Oh, I never want to do that again,'” he explained in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. I loved every moment of it.
“I mean, I wanted to do other things. And when we started seriously talking about rebooting, I had just started doing the TV show ‘Julia,’ and I was working on a musical, and I wanted to do something else, not this time.” I was planning to do a musical.
“Then I thought, ‘I don’t want to be so passionate about the show that I can’t do something like this.'”
In addition to his busy schedule, David didn’t think he needed to be involved in the revival.
She added: “I also thought, ‘They don’t actually need me.'” Frasier moves to a new world and new characters are introduced.
“And I think I’m right. It’s working. And the new talent they’ve brought in is great.”
Kelsey previously spoke candidly about David’s decision not to return.
He told People magazine last year that “David basically decided he wasn’t really interested in repeating Niles’ performance.”
The initial idea for the revival, which was conceived for “six or seven years”, was to bring back the entire so-called “legacy cast”, including Kelsey, David, and Peri Gilpin (Roz Doyle). Jane Leeves (Daphne Moon) and the late John Mahoney (Martin Crane), who passed away in 2018.
However, Kelsey admitted that David’s decision changed plans for the Paramount+ series.
He said: “It took us to new places in a very interesting way. That’s what we originally wanted to do anyway, and that was Fraser’s third act. For him It’s a whole new life.”
