Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar has been announced as the first inductee into the UFC Hall of Fame for the 2024 class. The announcement was made during the broadcast of UFC 297, and Edgar, 42, was in attendance at Scotiabank Arena to witness his honor.
Edgar joins a modern wing of the UFC Hall of Fame that includes iconic fighters such as Jose Aldo, BJ Penn, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Georges St-Pierre and Ronda Rousey. Throughout his prime, Edgar displayed his skills as a three-division threat. Notably, he won the 155-pound title with a controversial upset victory over BJ Penn at UFC 112 in April 2010. Edgar successfully defended his lightweight title three times before moving down to featherweight, where he challenged for the title twice.
Edgar’s legacy includes a trilogy of bouts with Gray Maynard, the second of which is considered one of the greatest bouts in MMA history. Known for his exciting style, Edgar has earned eight Fight of the Night bonuses in his 15-year UFC career, second only to Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz. .
The New Jersey native retired in November 2022 following a knockout loss to Chris Gutierrez, finishing his professional MMA career with a record of 24-11-1. UFC CEO Dana White praised Edgar, saying, “Frankie had an incredible career, consistently competing against some of the best athletes in the world in multiple weight classes for over 15 years. It’s an honor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.”
Induction ceremonies are typically scheduled to take place in the summer to coincide with International Fight Week. Edgar’s tremendous contributions to the sport and his illustrious career make him worthy of his induction into the UFC Hall of Fame.
