French pharmacies offer free condoms to young people under the age of 26. French President Emmanuel Macron calls it “a small revolution in preventive medicine.”

A new health strategy aimed at curbing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among French youth was implemented on New Year’s Day and announced by Macron in December. However, it was later expanded to include minors.

Emergency contraceptive pills will be provided free of charge to all women without a prescription after January 1, according to a tweet Monday by government spokesperson Olivier Bellan.

From January 1, 2022, French women under the age of 26 can get free birth control. This includes consultation with your doctor or midwife and medical procedures related to your choice of contraceptives.

The latest measures come at a time when health officials estimate that the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases in France has increased by about 30% in 2020 and 2021, Reuters reported.

“This is a small revolution in preventive medicine. It is essential for our young people to protect themselves during sexual intercourse” Macron Said in December.
