Former Afghan lawmaker Mursal Nabizada and her security guard were shot dead at their home in Kabul early Sunday morning, according to Kabul police.

Nabizada represented Kabul in the Afghan parliament from 2019 until the government was overthrown by the Taliban in August 2021.

Nabizada’s brother was also injured in the attack, Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said, adding that an investigation was underway to determine who carried out the attack.

Local police chief Morbi Hamidullah Khalid said the shooting took place around 3 a.m. local time on Sunday.

Sunday’s shooting is the first time a former government lawmaker has been killed in the city since the Taliban took power, but there are signs that the security situation in the capital is deteriorating.

At least five people were killed last Wednesday in an explosion near the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to Kabul police.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said in a statement condemning the attack that “the rising unrest is a serious concern.” “Violence is not part of the solution that will bring lasting peace to Afghanistan.”

Multiple attacks have claimed dozens of lives in the capital since the Taliban took control of the country.

Last September, a suicide bomber attacked an education center in Kabul, killing at least 25 people, mostly young women.

Earlier that month, a suicide bombing near the Russian embassy killed six people, including two Russian embassy employees.

In August an explosion at a mosque during evening prayers killed 21 people and injured 33 others.
