Manchester United has signed a new contract with Erik ten Hag, keeping him at the club until June 2026.
Ten Hag already had a contract at Old Trafford until 2025 but the club activated an existing option to add an extra 12 months to his contract.
The 54-year-old will remain as United manager following the club’s end-of-season review and has extended his previous contract, which was due to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season, on the current terms.
The Dutchman was appointed United manager in 2022 after winning six trophies, including three Eredivisie titles, in four and a half seasons in charge of Ajax.
“We are very pleased to have reached an agreement to continue cooperating with the club,” Ten Hag said.
“Looking back over the past two years I can be very proud of the two trophies and the many examples of progress we have made since I joined, but I must also be clear that there is still a lot of work to be done to reach the level expected of Manchester United, in terms of challenging for English and European titles.”
“In discussions with the clubs, we are fully aligned in our vision for achieving these goals and we are all firmly committed to walking that path together.”

Dan Ashworth, the club’s new sporting director, who took up his post at Old Trafford earlier this week, said of ten Hag’s contract renewal: “Having won two trophies in the past two seasons, Eric has strengthened his record as one of the most consistently successful coaches in European football.”
“Last season’s review of the club highlighted areas that needed improvement but also came to the clear conclusion that Eric is the best partner for us to work with to drive standards and results up. This group of players and staff have already proven they are capable of competing and winning at the top level, now we just need to do so more consistently.”
United are set to finish eighth in the Premier League in 2023-24, their worst result since 1990, and were also eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage.
However, ten Hag led the team to their first FA Cup victory since 2016 in the final against Manchester City, and also won the Carabao Cup in his first season in charge, ending United’s six-year trophyless run.
Meanwhile, talks are ongoing over a coaching shake-up as United are in talks to add Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Ake to Ten Hag’s coaching staff.
Athletic It was reported in June that first-team coach Benny McCarthy would leave the club at the end of his contract and assistant coach Mitchell van der Gag was also expected to leave, with Steve McClaren and Darren Fletcher both expected to remain on Ten Hag’s staff.
Athletic And former United striker Van Nistelrooy has been linked with the vacant Burnley managerial post and is reportedly in talks to return to Old Trafford.
Van Nistelrooy established himself as a fans’ favourite, scoring 150 goals in 219 appearances for United between 2001 and 2006, and won the Dutch Cup in his one season in charge of PSV Eindhoven.
Haque, 47, has not held a managerial role since leaving PSV one game before the end of the 2022-23 season but is likely to join Ten Hag’s coaching staff alongside the 52-year-old Haque, who is leaving his job as manager of Eredivisie side Go Ahead Eagles, where Ten Hag began his managerial career.
Haque is an experienced coach having managed five clubs in the Netherlands, including two seasons at FC Twente and 18 months at FC Utrecht.
Van der Gag and McCarthy, who dream of becoming managers again, joined United along with ten Hag in the summer of 2022.
