This week, the UAE experienced its heaviest rains in 75 years. The unprecedented weather caused chaos in all seven emirates and raised concerns about sudden changes in the climate.
The UAE’s state-run WAM news agency called the unlikely rain and storm a “historic weather event” as the bad weather affected the daily lives of residents, causing deaths and human damage.

This now-viral clip was shared on microblogging platform X/Twitter.
The unprecedented weather event brought severe thunderstorms, rain, hail and lightning. Streets in the UAE were flooded, not only bringing normal activities to a halt but also affecting air travel. For safety reasons, the Emirates ordered the closure of offices and schools for several days.
The storm hit not only the United Arab Emirates but also Oman. The UAE city of Al Ain, which borders Oman, reportedly experienced the heaviest rainfall. This was the largest 24-hour event since records were set in 1949.
According to Khaleej Times, the UAE National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has released the weather forecast for April 23, 2024. The forecast shows partly cloudy conditions with occasional cloud cover. NCM also warned of the possibility of light to moderate rainfall.
