Uganda provides a stable supply of vanilla that meets sustainable standards

KAMPALA, UGANDA (22 May 2024) – The Vanilla Exporters Association of Uganda (VANEX) is raising awareness on the need to diversify sources of vanilla to avoid supply chain disruptions, while also highlighting the unique benefits of Ugandan vanilla.

“Government interventions, weather events and other unforeseen influences can all impact the vanilla supply chain,” said Prossy Tumushabe, executive director of VANEX. “By sourcing vanilla from multiple countries of origin, food and beverage brands and chefs can ensure stability of supply and increase business flexibility.”

With quality on par with Madagascar vanilla, a unique flavour profile, an ideal growing climate and a hands-off government, Uganda is a natural choice for brands looking to diversify their vanilla supplies.

  • It is the same variety as Madagascar vanilla and there is no difference in quality.
  • High vanillin content, up to 4.5%, creates a bold flavour with notes of cocoa and leather born from nutrient-rich soil.
  • It is grown sustainably without the use of pesticides, fungicides, ploughing or slash-and-burn agriculture.
  • It is the only place on Earth where vanilla is harvested twice a year, ensuring a regular and stable supply.
  • The inland terrain protects crops from destructive weather events. Free trade without government intervention in prices.

“Diversifying vanilla’s country of origin isn’t a top priority for most brands because they haven’t experienced any disruption yet, but expanding into multiple sources is a great way to future-proof your supply,” said Craig Nielsen, vice president of sustainability at U.S.-based flavor house Nielsen Massey Vanilla Inc. “Uganda is not yet a big name in the vanilla industry, but it is emerging as a world-class source.”

Moreover, Uganda is well positioned to provide vanilla in the quantities and specifications required by customers of all sizes.

“Uganda is exporting 250 tonnes of vanilla in 2022 and is well positioned to meet increased demand as per market requirements,” said Abubaker Mulindwa, Managing Director, Natural Extract Industries Uganda Ltd. “Furthermore, Ugandan vanilla is available in various grades and specifications including certified organic, fair trade certified, Rainforest Alliance certified and HACCP certified.”

Uganda’s vanilla industry is working with organisations around the world, including VANEX, the Ugandan Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Catholic Relief Services, the Sustainable Vanilla Initiative and the US Department of Agriculture, to improve vanilla quality and position Uganda as a world-class sourcing source.
