“I just found out that you can actually get door handles,” he says, showing the camera what appears to be a piece of black molded plastic. These are designed to attach to the flush handle of your Tesla Model 3. The content creator’s red EV can be seen in the background of a video showcasing accessories.
“So I ordered it a few weeks ago and it finally arrived here,” he says. He then pointed to the Model 3’s standard door handle, which he had previously customized. “I got them packaged, but they’ve been opened so many times that they’re starting to peel off. So I’m going to try these out and see how well they work and if I can keep them going.”
There appears to be a red sticker on the back of the add-on handle that is designed to be removable. When you remove this sticker, the adhesive will be exposed. The molded handle attaches to the standard Tesla handle and provides the driver/rider with a more traditional car door opening experience.
Let’s test it
Car owners walk around their cars and express their enthusiasm for this add-on.
“I’m really excited about it. It’s pretty sophisticated,” he says. “I’m just interested in what they look like and what they don’t look like. I hope they don’t break.”
Following this, his video switched to show him installing a steering wheel on his car. They appear to be flush with the vehicle and he begins his assessment.
“It’s very sophisticated. I’m going to let them sit for a second. I’m going to put the glue on pretty tightly. I don’t want to pull it out yet,” he said, before pulling it and making sure the handle stayed in place. I confirmed that there is.
viewers were conflicted
Viewers were divided in the comments section, with many mocking the creator’s frequent use of the phrase “whatever.” “It looks cool but it’s not,” one person wrote.
Another person agreed, writing, “Looks good, I don’t care.”
However, many believed the handle interfered with the Model 3’s design language. Some viewed the add-on as an unnecessary upgrade and drew comparisons to popular consumer technology products.
“It’s like attaching a string to an airpod or something,” they wrote.
Another said he wasn’t sure if the steering wheel would hold up to daily driving, saying, “It’s going to fall off and we’ll see.”
On the other hand, some criticized Tesla’s floating exchange rate system. “The range will be reduced by about 30 miles,” they joked.
deal with controversy
As a former Tesla Model 3 owner, I know the pros and cons of this vehicle’s flush handle. As with other Tesla stories featured on the Daily Dot, opening the door can be a pain on cold days. Frost can cause these flush handles to stick in place. Hit the “thick” part at the base of the handle with your knuckles to break the frost and the door will open.
It’s also a pain that there’s no handle to put your fingers through when you’re holding something in your hand. Therefore, if you are carrying a bag containing groceries, etc., you will need to open the bag with your free hand. This means that the handle add-on could be a good solution for those who are dissatisfied with this experience.
