What’s worse is that implementation of the Real ID Act, passed after the 9/11 terrorist attacks to prevent people from using loose identification to board planes illegally, has been delayed for 16 years. .
Most of the hijackers used state driver’s licenses issued by states with less stringent requirements for flying. They were not in the country illegally.

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannulias said the purple stripe “has become a ‘scarlet letter’ on someone’s immigration status.” Going forward, legal residents and undocumented residents of Illinois will be eligible for the same “standard license,” which states “federal restrictions apply,” but with a May 2025 deadline. This is an ambiguous expression. Meanwhile, illegal immigrants are boarding planes.
New York State is similar, issuing “standard” licenses that are available to everyone, including illegal aliens. It has a vague phrase that says it’s “not for federal purposes,” which only applies after May 2025. New York City’s ID program also blurs the distinction between legal and illegal people. It is touted as one ID for all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status. The card looks like a state driver’s license, but there’s not a single word to warn viewers otherwise. It’s unlikely to work on a plane, but it could allow anyone to get past security in an office tower and into an elevator.
