Perry is a very nice guy from North Carolina that I met in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He is a consultant in his 30s who has walked the Appalachian Trail. He thinks Vice President Kamala Harris is losing.
“I wish she was more clear about who she is,” he told me. And while he likes her, even more than President Biden, he’s no fool and sees the wheels of her campaign coming off.

Honestly, I was grateful that Perry spoke to me because it’s getting harder and harder to get Democrats to talk these days. Like grieving New York Mets fans, they seem to be licking their wounds and aren’t particularly talkative.

That wasn’t the case two months ago. The Democratic Party, elated by the dispatch of Mr. Biden and the anointing of Ms. Harris as its nominee, was at its peak and engaged in chatter.
But Perry, in his charming Southern tone, was happy to tell me that “Democrats are just closer to my values.” He has friends who voted for former President Trump, and thankfully that hasn’t caused many relationships to break up.
I questioned Perry a bit. Because he was a really, really nice guy. I said, “Why? What inspires you about Harris?”
What followed was a familiar distant look, like an eager hand grasping something that wasn’t there. “She gives me hope,” he said. Honestly, that was the best pitch I’ve ever heard from Harris. A journey of several months.
Later in the evening, I met Ryan, a former military veteran and Trump supporter in his early 40s. Ryan hasn’t made a lot of headlines or given off-topic speeches, he just thinks Trump is solid and has no idea who Harris is.

Turns out he went to West Point with my much more impressive cousin Joey. As the emails continued, I realized how small Pennsylvania actually is for all its vast forests and mountains, filled with the awe and grace of fall. We all know each other very well.
And what I do know is that no matter what the polls say, Trump is winning in Pennsylvania. I’m not saying it’s over, but this is more than momentum. It’s starting to feel like fate.
Nicole, my hotel housekeeper and Harris supporter, told me over her morning cigarette that she liked the vice president. I said, “If I gave you $100 right now and I had to dress one of you, what would you do?”
“Trump,” she said, gesturing to a sign across the old Carlisle road. There was little doubt in her voice.

I remembered the man I had talked to the night before. His family has owned coal mines in Pennsylvania for a century, and I said, “So you’re going to go into that little tunnel? I don’t think I can do it.”
He said, “It’s not that bad, I don’t mind taking a little time.” I might take it up with him once the unpleasant situation is all over.
“We sell coal to China,” he told me. “I’d like to sell it in the United States, but I can’t.”
“Do you think things would change if Trump were elected?” I asked him.

“I hope so,” he said. And then that word came out again. Hope.
Harris needs Perry and a housekeeper, and she has them. Well, that’s not quite right. Democrats have them, not Harris, and that’s the problem.
Love him, hate him or ignore him, Trump is who he is, and voters know what they’re getting. Harris remains an enigma, a vague promise full of high-handed, arrogant words, almost ghostly.
Ghosts don’t win elections, which is exactly why Kamala Harris lost Pennsylvania and was on the verge of falling to Trump.

Perry wants something and someone to vote for. I could hear it in his voice, and he deserved it.
Whether he gets it remains to be seen.
